Bible verse of the day

Today's verse from the King James Version: the same verse the Faithero app shows this morning, with a short note on what it means.

Today

“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,”
1 Corinthians 13:4 KJV

“Charity” is the King James word for love. Paul begins his famous description with patience and kindness: love shows up in how we treat people.

How to spend a minute with today's verse

A Bible quote of the day is easy to read and easy to forget. Four small steps help it stay with you. Read it three times, slowly, once out loud. Then read the chapter around it, so you see what it meant where it was first written. Turn it into a short prayer: thank God for what it promises, or ask for what it calls you to. Last, carry one phrase with you and say it again at lunch.

If you want a little more than a minute, a simple daily devotional takes about ten, and a short morning prayer pairs well with today's verse.

The 40 verses in the rotation

The verse of the day moves through these, one a day, then starts again. All in the King James Version.

  1. John 3:16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The whole gospel in one sentence: God’s love is why Jesus came, and trusting Him is the way into a life that does not end.
  2. Psalm 23:1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.David pictures God as a shepherd who leads, feeds and protects. With Him, nothing you truly need will be missing.
  3. Philippians 4:13I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.Paul wrote this about being content with much or with little. Christ’s strength is for every circumstance, not a promise that we will win at everything.
  4. Jeremiah 29:11For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.God spoke this to exiles in Babylon who faced seventy years away from home (verse 10). His plans for His people are good, even when the waiting is long.
  5. Proverbs 3:5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.Trust God with your whole heart, especially where your own understanding runs out. The next verse promises that He will direct your paths.
  6. Romans 8:28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Not that everything is good, but that God works in all things for the good of those who love Him. It is a promise for hard seasons, not a denial of them.
  7. Isaiah 41:10Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Promise after promise in one verse: God is with you, He is your God, and He will strengthen, help and hold you up. Fear does not get the last word.
  8. Psalm 46:1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.God is a hiding place and strength for the fight, and He is “very present”: near right now, in the middle of the trouble.
  9. Matthew 6:33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.Jesus says this right after telling us not to worry about food and clothes. Put God’s kingdom first, and trust Him with the rest.
  10. John 14:6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.Jesus does not only show the way to God; He is the way. Truth and life are found in Him, not in a set of rules.
  11. Psalm 119:105Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.A lamp lights the next few steps, not the whole road. God’s Word often shows us the next faithful step, and that is enough.
  12. 1 Corinthians 13:4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,“Charity” is the King James word for love. Paul begins his famous description with patience and kindness: love shows up in how we treat people.
  13. Galatians 5:22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,The fruit of the Spirit is what God grows in a person over time, and the list goes on in verse 23. Fruit grows; it is not forced.
  14. Ephesians 2:8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:Salvation is a gift received by faith, not a wage earned. That is why no one can boast about it, and why anyone can receive it.
  15. Hebrews 11:1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.Faith is confidence in what God has promised but we cannot see yet. The rest of Hebrews 11 shows what that looked like in real lives.
  16. Matthew 11:28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Jesus invites the tired and the overloaded to come to Him. The rest He gives is for the soul, and it starts with simply coming.
  17. Psalm 27:1The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the Lord is your light and your salvation, fear loses its grip. David asks two brave questions and already knows the answer.
  18. Isaiah 40:31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.Waiting on the Lord is not idle; it is trust. Those who hope in Him find new strength for soaring, for running and for the long walk.
  19. Romans 12:2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.Do not let the world press you into its shape. God changes us from the inside, by renewing the way we think.
  20. 2 Timothy 1:7For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.Fear is not God’s gift. His Spirit gives power, love and a sound mind: courage that is also kind and clear-headed.
  21. Psalm 91:1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. To dwell in God’s “secret place” is to live close to Him. Those who stay near Him find shelter in His shadow.
  22. John 16:33These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.Jesus does not promise a life without trouble. He promises peace in Him, because He has already overcome the world.
  23. 1 Peter 5:7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.Throw your worries onto God, not because they are small, but because He cares for you. It is an invitation, not a scolding.
  24. Psalm 37:4Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. When God is your delight, your desires begin to change. The heart that delights in Him is given what it truly longs for.
  25. Proverbs 16:3Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.Hand your work over to God, plans and all. When He is part of the plan, the plan has firm footing.
  26. Joshua 1:9Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.God said this to Joshua before he led Israel into the land. Courage rests on one fact: God goes with you wherever you go.
  27. Psalm 121:1I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. The psalmist looks to the hills and wonders where help will come from. The next verse answers: from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
  28. Romans 10:9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.Salvation is simple enough to say out loud: Jesus is Lord, and God raised Him from the dead. Believe it in your heart and say it with your mouth.
  29. 1 John 4:19We love him, because he first loved us.Our love for God is always an answer. He loved us first, and His love makes ours possible.
  30. Matthew 5:16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.Jesus calls His followers the light of the world. Good done in the open points people to God, not to us.
  31. Philippians 4:6Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.In the King James Version, “careful” means full of care, that is, anxious. Instead of worrying, bring every request to God, with thanks.
  32. Psalm 34:8O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.An invitation to know God, not just to know about Him. Those who trust Him find out for themselves that He is good.
  33. Colossians 3:23And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;Ordinary work becomes worship when it is done for the Lord. Do it with your whole heart, whoever is watching.
  34. Isaiah 26:3Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.Perfect peace belongs to the mind that keeps leaning on God, because it trusts Him.
  35. Psalm 118:24This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.Today is a day God made, whatever it holds. The choice to rejoice is made before we know how the day will go.
  36. 2 Corinthians 5:17Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.In Christ a person is made new. Your past does not get the final say about who you are.
  37. Matthew 7:7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:Ask, seek, knock: Jesus invites prayer that keeps going. Your Father loves to give good things to His children (verse 11).
  38. John 8:12Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.Jesus is the light of the world. Following Him means we do not have to walk in the dark.
  39. Psalm 139:14I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. You were made with care and wonder. David praises God for how He formed him, and the same is true of you.
  40. Proverbs 18:10The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.God’s name, His character, is like a fortified tower. In trouble, run to Him and be safe.
