How Many Books Are in the Bible?

66 in most Protestant Bibles, 73 in Catholic Bibles, and more in Orthodox ones. Here is where the difference comes from.

Published 9 min read

It sounds like a question with one answer, but the honest answer is: it depends on whose Bible you are holding. The difference is all in the Old Testament, and it comes from a long and sometimes heated history. Here are the numbers, the books that differ, and why.

The short answer

A Protestant Bible has 66 books: 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New. A Catholic Bible has 73: the same 27 in the New Testament, and 46 in the Old. Eastern Orthodox Bibles have a longer Old Testament still, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church counts 81 books in all.

The Protestant Old Testament holds the same books as the Jewish Bible, which counts them as 24 because it treats some pairs and groups as single books: the twelve Minor Prophets, for example, are one book. Whether a Bible has 66 or 73 books, Christians of every tradition read the same four Gospels and the same letters of the apostles.

The Ethiopian church groups and counts its books in its own way, so its 46 Old Testament books are not the same 46 as in a Catholic Bible.

What books are in the Catholic Bible that are not in the Protestant Bible?

Seven books. Catholics call them deuterocanonical books; Protestants usually call them the Apocrypha.

  1. Tobit A faithful Israelite family in exile, and the angel Raphael who guides and heals them.
  2. Judith A widow who saves her people from an invading army.
  3. 1 Maccabees The Jewish revolt led by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers against the Hellenistic king Antiochus IV, in the second century BC.
  4. 2 Maccabees More of the same struggle, with stories of faithful martyrs. In chapter 12 Judas makes an offering for fallen soldiers, which the Catholic Catechism cites for praying for the dead (Catechism 1032).
  5. Wisdom Also called the Wisdom of Solomon: a meditation on wisdom and on the hope of the righteous.
  6. Sirach Also called Ecclesiasticus: practical wisdom, much like Proverbs, from Jesus the son of Sirach.
  7. Baruch Words credited to Baruch, the scribe who wrote down Jeremiah's prophecies (Jeremiah 36:4). Its sixth chapter is the Letter of Jeremiah.

Catholic Bibles also have longer forms of Esther and Daniel. Daniel 3:24-90 (the prayer of Azariah and the song of the three young men in the furnace), Daniel 13 (Susanna) and Daniel 14 (Bel and the Dragon) come from the Greek form of the book.

Why do Catholic and Protestant Bibles have different books?

The difference goes back to two forms of the Old Testament. The Hebrew Scriptures of the Jewish people contain the books Protestants have today. But because Greek was the common language of the Mediterranean world, Jewish scholars translated the Scriptures into Greek between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. That translation, the Septuagint, included several books that are not in the Hebrew Bible, among them the seven above.

Early church leaders weighed these books differently. Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin, preferred the Hebrew canon and gave these books a secondary place, although most of them were still included in his Latin Bible, the Vulgate. Augustine accepted them. Through the Middle Ages their status stayed unsettled.

At the Reformation the question came to a head. Martin Luther kept these books in his German Bible but placed them in a separate section as Apocrypha, worth reading but not equal to Scripture. The Church of England's Article VI says the Church reads them “for example of life and instruction of manners” but does not use them “to establish any doctrine”. The Westminster Confession, a Presbyterian standard, calls them “no part of the canon of the Scripture” (1.3). Older printings of the King James Version itself, such as the Oxford edition of 1769, still placed “The Books called Apocrypha” between the Testaments, but by the 1800s many English Protestant Bibles left them out entirely.

The Catholic Church gave its answer at the Council of Trent. On April 8, 1546, the council declared these books canonical, Scripture in the full sense. Eastern Orthodox Christians also accept them, as part of what they call the longer canon.

Each side has reasons it finds weighty. Protestants point out that these books were not in the Hebrew Scriptures that the Jewish people kept, which the Reformers believed were also the Bible of Jesus and the apostles. Catholics and Orthodox point out that the church read these books from its early centuries and received them as Scripture. Knowing the history will not settle the debate, but it can help Christians on each side understand the other. For how the Bible was handed down, see is the Bible reliable?

Do Orthodox Bibles have more books?

Yes. Eastern Orthodox churches read the Old Testament in the tradition of the Greek Septuagint. The Orthodox Church in America, for example, counts Tobit, Judith, the longer Esther and Daniel, the books of Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch and the Prayer of Manasseh as fully part of the Old Testament. Orthodox sources do not all give the same list, so there is no single Orthodox total.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has a larger Bible still. The church says its canon has 46 Old Testament books and 35 New Testament books, 81 in all, including Enoch and Jubilees, which are not in Catholic, Protestant or Eastern Orthodox Bibles.

The longest chapter is Psalm 119, with 176 verses; the shortest is Psalm 117, with 2. Bibles that include more books, or number some chapters and verses differently, have different totals.

In Faithero you can read all 66 books in the King James Version or the Douay-Rheims and have any chapter read aloud. The app's Douay-Rheims has the 66 books it shares with the King James Version, so Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch and 1 and 2 Maccabees are not in the app; for those you will need a printed Catholic Bible or another source.

Frequently asked

How many books are in the Bible?

It depends on the Bible. Protestant Bibles have 66 books: 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New. Catholic Bibles have 73: 46 and 27. Eastern Orthodox Bibles have more Old Testament books still, with lists that differ from church to church, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church counts 81. Protestant, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles share the same 27 New Testament books.

How many books are in the Catholic Bible?

The Catholic Bible has 73 books: 46 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New. Its seven extra Old Testament books are Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach and Baruch, and its Esther and Daniel are longer than in Protestant Bibles. The Council of Trent confirmed this list on April 8, 1546.

Why do Protestant Bibles have fewer books?

Protestant Bibles follow the Hebrew Scriptures of the Jewish people, which do not include the seven books found in the Greek Septuagint. At the Reformation, Martin Luther moved those books into a separate section called the Apocrypha, and later Protestant Bibles often left them out. Catholic and Orthodox Christians hold that the church received these books as Scripture.

What is the Apocrypha?

Protestants use the word Apocrypha for the books in the Greek Old Testament that are not in the Hebrew Bible, such as Tobit, Judith, Wisdom and Sirach. Catholics call the ones they accept deuterocanonical books and count them as Scripture. The word comes from a Greek verb meaning to hide away.

How many chapters and verses are in the Bible?

The King James Version has 1,189 chapters and 31,102 verses: 929 chapters and 23,145 verses in the Old Testament, and 260 chapters and 7,957 verses in the New. The longest chapter is Psalm 119, with 176 verses, and the shortest is Psalm 117, with 2.

Is the Book of Enoch in the Bible?

Not in Protestant, Catholic or Eastern Orthodox Bibles, but it is part of the Bible of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The letter of Jude cites a prophecy of Enoch, "Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints" (Jude 1:14, KJV). Citing a book is not the same as counting it as Scripture: Paul quoted Greek poets too (Acts 17:28).

More than a number

Christians still disagree about seven books, and that disagreement matters. But it should not hide how much they share. Every Christian Bible holds the Law and the Prophets, the Psalms, the four Gospels and the letters of the apostles. Jesus Himself spoke of the Scriptures as everything “written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me” (Luke 24:44, KJV).

The count is the easy part. The real gift is reading them. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4, KJV).
