Thanksgiving Prayer

Short prayers to say before the meal, prayers for family and friends and for a hard year, a thank-you prayer for kids, and Psalm 100 to read together.

Published 8 min read

Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26, in the United States, and somewhere between carving the turkey and passing the potatoes, someone will be asked to say grace. If that someone is you, this page is for you. (In Canada, Thanksgiving comes sooner: Monday, October 12.) The prayers below are written to be read aloud at a real table, and most take less than a minute. Use them as they are, change the details, or let them help you find your own words.

A short Thanksgiving prayer before the meal

Before the meal, short is best: the food is hot and the children are hungry. Each of these takes about twenty seconds to pray aloud. The verse under each prayer is there if someone would like to read Scripture first. (In the King James Version, “meat” means food of any kind.)

A short Thanksgiving prayer for the whole table

Lord God, thank You for this food and for the hands that made it. Thank You for every person at this table, and for carrying us through another year. Bless this meal and our time together, and make us generous with all You have given us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.”
Psalm 126:3 KJV

A simple Thanksgiving prayer before the meal

Father, before we eat, we stop to say thank You. For this food, for these people, and for Your mercy on every day of this year, we are grateful. Amen.

“The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.”
Psalm 145:15-16 KJV

A Thanksgiving prayer for a small table

Lord, our table is small this year, but Your goodness is not. Thank You for this meal and for the company we have. Be near to everyone who is eating alone today, and do not let us forget how much we have been given. Amen.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights”
James 1:17 KJV

Thanksgiving dinner prayer for family

When the whole family is together, a slightly longer prayer can name what this year held: the new baby, the move, the diagnosis, the graduation, the long drive in. Family tables also hold old tension, and Scripture is honest about that: “Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife” (Proverbs 17:1, KJV). It is good to ask God for peace at the table. Just keep the prayer kind: grace is not the place to settle an argument.

A Thanksgiving dinner prayer for family

Gracious God, thank You for bringing us together around this table. Thank You for each person here: for the ones who traveled far and the ones who cooked all day, for the oldest among us and the youngest. Thank You for the good things this year held, and for staying with us through the hard ones. Bless this food and the conversations we will share over it. Give us patience with each other, quick laughter and slow tempers. Help us to listen well and to forgive what needs forgiving. Remember the family who cannot be with us today, and keep them in Your care. We are grateful, Lord, and we want our lives to show it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
Psalm 133:1 KJV

Thanksgiving prayer for family and friends

Many Thanksgiving tables are mixed: relatives, old friends, a neighbor, a coworker who could not get home, a roommate meeting everyone for the first time. A Friendsgiving works the same way. These prayers thank God for everyone in the room, and for the people you love who are somewhere else today.

A Thanksgiving prayer for family and friends

Lord, thank You for the gift of family and the gift of friends, and for the people who have become both. Thank You for everyone at this table: the ones we have known all our lives and the ones we are only getting to know. Thank You for the friends who stayed close this year, who called, showed up and made us laugh. Bless this food and this company. Make our home a place where anyone can feel welcome. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
Proverbs 17:17 KJV

A prayer for the ones who are not at the table

Father, some of the people we love are not with us today. Some live far away, some are working, and some could not come. We thank You for each of them. Keep them safe, give them a good meal and good company wherever they are, and let them know they are loved and missed. Amen.

“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you”
Philippians 1:3 KJV

A Thanksgiving prayer in a hard year

Some years it is hard to say grace. There is an empty chair, a diagnosis, a job or a marriage that ended, money that ran short. Giving thanks in a year like that does not mean pretending. Paul wrote, “In every thing give thanks” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, KJV): in everything, not for everything. The prophet Habakkuk pictured failed crops and empty stalls and still chose to rejoice in God. Thanks in a hard year is quieter, but it is real.

If someone you love has died this year, our prayers for grief include a prayer for the holidays without them.

A Thanksgiving prayer in a hard year

Lord, this has been a hard year, and You know all of it. You saw the nights we could not sleep and the news we did not want. You know whose chair is empty today. We do not have to pretend at this table. But we can still thank You: for this meal, for the people who stayed close, for the strength to get this far, and for the hope that You are not finished with us. Hold the ones among us who are hurting most today. Be our comfort, and give us what we need for each day ahead. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”
Habakkuk 3:17-18 KJV

A short prayer for the empty chair

Lord, we miss [name] today. Thank You for every year we shared this table with them. We bring You our sorrow and our thanks together, and we trust them to Your love. Amen.

“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3 KJV

Thanksgiving prayers from the Bible

The Bible has its own Thanksgiving prayers, and they are short enough to read at the table. Psalm 100 is five verses long: try reading it together before the meal, one verse per person. Psalm 107 and Psalm 136 begin with the same line, and Psalm 136 repeats “for his mercy endureth for ever” (Psalm 136:1, KJV) in every one of its 26 verses, so everyone can join in. Jesus gave thanks at meals too: He “took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples” (John 6:11, KJV).

“Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
Psalm 100KJV
“O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Psalm 107:1KJV
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18KJV

A thank-you prayer for kids to say

Children pray best with short lines and real things. Let them name what they are thankful for, even if it is the dog or the pie. One easy way: before the meal, go around the table and let each child finish the sentence “Thank You, God, for...” Psalm 136 works well with kids too: an adult reads the first half of each verse, and the children answer with its refrain. For everyday prayers with children, see our prayers for children.

A thank-you prayer for kids

Thank You, God, for my food. Thank You for my family and my friends. Thank You for my home, my bed, and for ___. Help me to share, to be kind, and to say thank you every day. Amen.

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD”
Psalm 92:1 KJV

A rhyming grace for little ones

Thank You, God, for food and friends, and for Your love that never ends. Thank You for this special day. Bless our meal. Amen, we pray.

How to lead a Thanksgiving prayer at the table

  1. Ask ahead of time

If you are hosting, ask someone before the meal whether they would like to pray, so no one is put on the spot. If you are the one asked, it is fine to read a prayer from this page.

  2. Keep it to a few sentences

Thirty seconds to a minute is plenty while the food is hot. Longer thanks can come later, over dessert or a walk.

  3. Name real things

Thank God for the cook, the travelers, the new baby, the prayer He answered this year. Specific thanks is easier to mean, and easier for others to join.

  4. Remember who is missing

One sentence for those who are far away, sick or grieving is enough. If a loss is fresh, a single gentle line says more than a long one.

  5. Close together

Invite everyone to say Amen with you, then pass the food.

Frequently asked

What do you say in a Thanksgiving prayer?

Thank God for specific gifts (the food, the people at the table, the ways He helped you this year), remember anyone who is missing or struggling, ask Him to bless the meal and the time together, and close with Amen. For example: "Lord, thank You for this food, for everyone at this table, and for carrying us through this year. Bless our meal and our time together. In Jesus' name, Amen."

How long should a Thanksgiving prayer be?

Before the meal, about thirty seconds to a minute: three or four sentences is plenty while the food is hot and people are hungry. If your family wants more time to give thanks, go around the table after the meal and let each person name one thing from the year.

Is Thanksgiving in the Bible?

The American holiday is not, but giving thanks is all through Scripture. The law of Moses included thank offerings (Leviticus 7:12) and a harvest feast, the Feast of Tabernacles, kept "when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land" (Leviticus 23:39, KJV). The Psalms are full of thanks, and Paul tells Christians to give thanks in every circumstance (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Our Thanksgiving Bible verses page gathers the best-known passages.

Can I pray at Thanksgiving if not everyone at the table believes?

Yes, with kindness. Keep the prayer short and warm, thank God sincerely for the food and the people, and do not use it to preach. You might say, "I would like to say a short prayer of thanks, and you are welcome to join me." Being thanked for is a gift, even to someone who does not pray.

When is Thanksgiving 2026?

In the United States, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November: Thursday, November 26, 2026. In Canada it is the second Monday of October: Monday, October 12, 2026.

After the dishes are done

Thanksgiving lasts one day, but the Bible treats thanks as a way of living. In the middle of a passage about how Christians should treat one another, Paul adds three plain words: “be ye thankful” (Colossians 3:15, KJV). Not only in November, and not only when the year went well.

If this Thursday stirs something in you, keep it going. Name one good thing at dinner each night, or thank God for three things before you fall asleep. Our prayers of gratitude are written for ordinary days, and our prayers before meals work for every dinner after this one.
